Social Democratic Party of Germany

The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD – Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands) is the oldest political party of Germany and also one of the oldest and largest in the world, celebrating its 140th anniversary in 2003. Rooted in the workers' movement, it formerly was more explicitly socialist (and is still a member party of the Socialist International); more recently, under Gerhard Schröder's lead, it has adopted a few tenets of neoliberalism while remaining committed to social welfare. Members of the party who are younger than 35 are organized into the "Jusos" (German: Jungsozialisten in der SPD, "Young Socialists in the SPD").
