Germany is a Federal Republic made up of 16 States, known in German as Länder (singular Land). Since Land is the German word for "country", the term Bundesländer (federal states; singular Bundesland) is commonly used as it is more specific. The cities of Berlin and Hamburg are states in their own right, termed Stadtstaaten (city states), while Bremen consists of two urban districts. The remaining 13 states are termed Flächenländer (area states).
